The towns used to be known to the Romans as Verulamium and when the first British Christian Martyr called Saint Alban was beheaded in AD308 this gave the town its modern name. The Medieval town grew up around the Benedictine foundation of St Albans Abbey the spot where the famous Martyr died. Two battles of the Wars of the Roses took place near the town and St Albans School was founded in AD948 and is the only school in the english speaking world to have educated a Pope, and is one of the oldest schools in the world.

There are many interesting landmarks, buildings and historical sites in St Albans including Ye Olde Fighting Cocks pub one of the oldest pubs in England, Kingsbury Watermill Museum, The Abbey and Clock Tower and areas such as the Market Place and Holywell Hill.
